Wetland wildlife celebration at WWT Welney

Join in with a celebration of wetland wildlife this summer at WWT Welney, West Norfolk, on Sat 20 & Sun 21 July. To celebrate the special location and the start of the summer holidays, the Welney Weekend will have a range of activities for friends and families to participate in.

Special guests Ajay Tegala and Nick Acheson will be headlining. These two conservationists from the East of England are fantastic storytellers.

Ajay’s talk takes place 6pm, Saturday 20 July, detailing his wetland wildlife experiences living and working in the Fens. As the author of The Unique Life of a Ranger and Wetland Diaries there will be an opportunity for visitors to buys copies and have them signed by Ajay.

Nick’s talk takes place 2pm, Sunday 21 July, with an opportunity to buy The Meaning of Geese and have it signed by Nick afterwards.

Lizzie Bruce, Site Manager at WWT Welney said, ‘Our Welney Weekender event will give visitors unforgettable experiences in nature, creating memories for families and moments to connect with wetlands for nature lovers. The fantastic team of staff and volunteers, coming together with local businesses and conservation friends, enhances our commitment to engaging audiences with incredible species and wetlands within the wider landscape’.

Extended opening hours give opportunities to connect with the wildlife and the landscape how best suits you: Saturday 6.30am-8pm and Sunday 6.30am-4pm.

Guided wildlife experiences include, meeting otherworldly wildlife at the moth mornings, trailer tours to see the cattle herds and access to the furthest reaches of our wetlands along the trails that make summer so special. This special weekend will bring the work we do to life this summer.

Local artists and businesses are coming together to share in this celebration of wetlands, supporting WWT Welney on this weekend and beyond. Blended Monkey will be sharing their skills in wood and ceramic crafts, with demos and items available to buy. Sharing their fantastic story of how they have fundraised and worked with national health charities. Wetlands inspire so much creativity within art, and local stars like Sue Welfare will be on site sharing her take on wetlands through linocut printmaking.

Informative and exciting talks will take place inside the visitor centre, from introducing you to the history of WWT Welney to present day conservation projects saving black-tailed godwits and corncrakes, and not forgetting wetland restoration in the wider landscape.

Members of WWT can enjoy the weekend and all the activities for free as part of supporting the incredible conservation taking place at Welney. As an offer to non-members, this weekend only you can enjoy the activities and events for £5 per adult and £2.50 per child.
