Norfolk has Europe’s last end-of-pier theatre – The Pavilion on the Grade II listed Victorian pier at Cromer.
There are records of Cromer having a pier as far back as 1391, but that was probably more a jetty – and it definitely didn’t have a cabaret show at its end.
Nowadays, the pier hosts an in-house variety show every summer and winter season, bringing together great pop music, West End ballads, speciality acts, top humour and slapstick.
The summer show typically includes more than 150 costumes, 48 pairs of shoes, 40 pairs of tights, 48 pairs of false eyelashes, 33 hats, 31 fascinators and 24 petticoats, all made by just two people.
The dance routines include 1,104 taps in a tap routine, 116 kicks in show numbers and 52 dance lifts. The record for the quickest costume change took just 17 seconds!
Cromer Pier was named Pier of the Year in March 2015 by the National Piers Society. Nice when you get an award from your peers.
