Wild Summer fun at RSPB Strumpshaw

Parents looking to keep children busy throughout the summer holidays can rely on RSPB Strumpshaw Fen nature reserve, just twenty minutes outside Norwich, for a truly ‘wild’ day out. Families can leave the gadgets at home this summer, and reconnect with the great outdoors by coming along to their local nature reserve to make magical memories and spend quality time together.

RSPB Strumpshaw Fen is open every day of the summer holidays (9.30am till 5pm) and is hosting are daily activities for families. Pond dipping kits are available to hire every day; children (and adults!) can discover what lurks beneath the water in the pond.

Adventurous families can grab an adventurer backpack and set out on the new ‘Family Adventure Trail’. The new ‘Family Adventure Trail’ offers visitors the chance to relax a while in the family hammock, try den building, hunt for minibeasts and have fun with twigs in the ‘twigology’ zone! Lucky visitors might spot dragonflies as big as their hands patrolling the ditch edges like helicopters, find a family of newts hiding out under a heavy log, or see marsh harriers soaring past the window of the reception hide.

Light refreshments, snacks and ice-cream are available from the reception hide to keep visitors going on their adventure. There are also plenty of picnic benches and toilets.

Every Friday throughout the summer holiday, families can also join the RSPB for #WildThings Wild Friday events running between 11am and 2pm. Activities include bug hunting, pond dipping, arts and crafts, and wildlife-themed games. Children will get the chance to make a mini bug hotel, willow fish, build and race their own rafts and design crazy clay bugs!

Hannah Dryland, RSPB Strumpshaw Fen Visitor Experience Manager, said, “We are looking forward to welcoming families to Strumpshaw Fen throughout the summer holidays. Getting children excited about nature and wildlife is our mission and we can’t wait to get started! Who has that vague memory of children having to be made to come inside for dinner, or told off for being covered in mud? Let this be a summer more like your own childhood, switch off and put down the gadgets, and let us reveal the wonders of nature and wildlife. We promise your whole family will feel the benefit.”
