Drawing on over a decade of professional experience in designing, crafting, and selling leather goods, Fenner will demonstrate the essential techniques and tools used to create high-quality handcrafted leatherwork. The session will provide those new to the craft with guidance and advice to help them get started and Fenner will also share some helpful tips and tricks from his experience working with leather that may prove useful to beginners and those with some previous leatherwork experience.

This introductory talk and demonstration session covers a variety of topics suited to beginners, starting with an overview of the main types of leather as well as suggestions on selecting leather. Demonstrations of the core practical leathercraft skills will include: marking out, cutting leather, setting rivets, hand sewing leather (saddle stitch) and edge burnishing/finishing. Alongside demonstrating these essential leatherworking techniques, Fenner will explain the tools and equipment that he uses and will also share important health and safety advice.

Attendees will receive a resource pack with some helpful information and a list of the tools and equipment demonstrated during the session.

This is a demonstration-based event therefore, there is no opportunity for students to try the tools and/or techniques during this particular session.
