The Garden at East Ruston Old Vicarage is unique. Its position close to the North Sea is sheltered from all but the most penetrating frosts allowing a surprising number of tender plants to flourish without winter protection. Entering the garden is akin to entering another world, the plants appear unbelievably larger and more prosperous than those grown elsewhere and are enhanced by large containers that in spring are bursting with colour from spring bulbs with a stunning variety of Tulips. In summer they are even more flamboyant with enormous Brugmansias and Solanums arranged with summer favourites, some familiar but many rare, unusual and exciting. The owners are keen to push the boundaries and their experimental attitude knows no bounds.
This garden contains many gardens within the whole, just when you think that you have seen it all, another surprise awaits around the next corner. From Exotic and Mediterranean Gardens to the Desert Wash now containing large specimens of Yuccas, Puyas, Dasylirions and Nolinias that display their flowering scapes at dizzying heights.
The Diamond Jubilee Walled Garden has matured and bursts with colour and scent from the Roses contained within. The Alitex greenhouse is home to an ever-changing display of plants from special Spring Bulbs in pots to Auriculas, then Old-fashioned Pelargoniums and finally Nerines although many other jewels find their way into this haven of delight. The monumental Fruit Cage is bursting with Cherries and Berries of all kinds including some old and rare varieties that do not ‘travel’, although they travel from vine to mouth very well!
A new Xerophytic Garden, new walled seating areas and paved Front Courtyard all contribute to the experience that only E.R.O.V can provide in an ever-changing panoply. Light lunches and afternoon teas are available.
