How Hill National Nature Reserve

In light of COVID-19, please make sure you check with your travel and accommodation providers before travelling.

How Hill National Nature Reserve forms a large area of established fen within the River Ant valley, north of Ludham Bridge. It is remarkable for its variety of Broads habitats. The reserve is of national and international importance for nature conservation, supporting a wide range of wetland plant communities and associated birds, insects and animal species.

There is lots to see and do at How Hill. Why not visit our Broads information centre Toad Hole Cottage? You'll find heaps of information, and you can have a look around to see how life was for a marshman and his family in the Broads many years ago.

Take a trip on our environmentally friendly boat, the Electric Eel, where you can get up close and personal with many different species. Stunning dragonflies, marsh harriers, wild flowers and swallowtail butterflies can be seen here at different times of the year, and you will have an experienced guide on hand to show you the wildlife and tell you about the origins of the Broads, the social history of the marshmen and the importance of marsh plants to people and wildlife.

If you prefer to be a bit more active, you can explore the wildlife trail to discover creatures and plants at home in the Broads.

Interpretation for use with a mobile phone has been created for the How Hill National Nature Reserve. Augmented reality uses the camera and GPS capabilities of smart phones to show additional information on screeen, on top of the real view fed in from the phone's camera. There is also an ebook available. Have a look at for further information or ask our staff.

There is free car parking, 24 hour free mooring and public toilets, and you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the picnic and playing field. Have a look at the mills of How Hill, and keep your eyes peeled - there are a number of nationally rare plants and animals living in the area.
