Details

As 2021 began, we found ourselves in a new relationship with the landscape that surrounds us. Somewhere Unexpected invited artists to submit work that acknowledged the significance of our immediate environments in the shifting context of a global pandemic.

From an open call which attracted over 600 entries, 38 artists working in East Anglia were selected, representing a wide variety of approaches, including painting, print, photography, sculpture and film. This new work provides tantalising and very personal glimpses of where we are now. The painting featured above is 'Glade in an Overgrown Scrapyard' by Alex Atkinson, © the artist.

The exhibition is on show in the Timothy Gurney Gallery at Norwich Castle as part of the bicentenary celebrations marking the death of legendary landscape artist John Crome, a founder of the Norwich School of Artists. It is perfectly suited to view alongside the Castle's major exhibition of Crome’s work, A Passion for Landscape: Rediscovering John Crome (http://ow.ly/zV0850EMWQ9).

Somewhere Unexpected was created in partnership with the East Anglia Art Fund with the aim of supporting artists in the region, and all works are for sale.
