The Norwich Players present:

Mary Shelley by Helen Edmundson

200 years after the publication of Frankenstein, The Norwich Players presents a compelling drama that reveals the real woman behind the monster.

Daughter of radical feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft and political philosopher William Godwin, Mary Shelley was born into a family wrestling with both the ideas of the age and its own inner demons. A sixteen year old Mary becomes obsessed with the memory of her mother who took her on life. Her behaviour threatens to ignite scandal and her questions threaten resurrection of long-buried truths. Into this fragile existence arrives a force of nature, the young poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom Mary rapidly falls in love.

With daring theatricality Helen Edmundson’s play explores how their scandalous elopement and the subsequent family breakdown crafted an imagination that would result in one the greatest novels of the English language.
