The Lodger

The Lodger

Synopsis: Pre-first world war London is being terrorised by a Jack the Ripper-style murderer, ‘The Avenger’, who targets young fair-haired women. A mysterious new lodger (Ivor Novello) arrives at the anonymous boarding house of Mr and Mrs Bunting, and begins to entrance the landlady’s pretty daughter Daisy (June Tripp) – who is being courted by a Scotland Yard detective on the killer’s trail. When the lodger begins behaving strangely, he attracts suspicion. With his mysterious night time excursions, might he not be the killer himself?
Featuring Hitchcock’s first director cameo (as a telephone operator), The Lodger is key to understanding the director’s origins. Heavily influenced by German Expressionism—with Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau in particular citation—Hitchcock patented his distinct visual style. Gruesome yet elegant, urbane yet distinctly Gothic, The Lodger is one of the ultimate Hitchcock films—not to be missed!

There will also be a brief introduction to the film by British Film historian Dr Paul Firth from the University of East Anglia.
