St Mary's Church, Snettisham01485 572539workChurchSt Mary's church was regarded by Pevsner as the best "decorated" church in East Anglia. Certainly, the stained-glasss windows alone are spectacular let alone the Medieval pulpit and eagle lectern. See too a very early example of a church bell.
The spire is second only to Norwich - whose spire is the tallest in this area - and the Cremer memorial is something to shout about! Various hatchments decorate the vestry and, for such a small Norfolk village, St Mary is quite cathedral-like and dominates the skyline. The present church was built in 1340, but a previous church existed and the village was built around it. The Black Death destroyed the original village.
The church is used as a beacon for sailors in the Wash. St Mary's was targeted by zeppelin bombers in WWI.
As well as being a centre for Christian worship for over 700 years, the church provides a safe haven from the busyness of 21st Century life - and regularly holds concerts, recitals and other events which attract both church and village alike.
