Outdoor Event, Sun 30 Sep 2018

The Searles Soap Box Derby is set to draw thousands to the streets of Hunstanton on Sunday 30 September. (Postponed from Sunday 23 September due to inclement weather forecast)

The Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk has organised a full day of free family entertainment and exciting handmade kart racing, in the Hunstanton Heritage Gardens.

The day will begin at 10am as registration opens for the competitors. The fifty teams will have their karts inspected to ensure they meet the race rules: a great chance for spectators to take a look at the magnificently-decorated karts and choose a favourite to cheer on!

Entertainment begins on The Green from 10:30am, with fun for children from Strange Fascination Theatre, a car display including Morris Minors and the police Porsche, and a gin tent run by the Hunstanton 4T5 Club, raising money for charity. There’ll be live music throughout the day, with performances at 10:30am from Sam Cook, the lead singer of Bear Club; at 1:40pm from Morganway, fresh from their appearance at the Cambridge Folk Festival; at 4pm from Dishy Tangent, the winner of this year’s Battle of the Bands.

From 11:30am Simon Gale the race commentator will be on the microphone, helping to build the excitement and announce the teams as they approach the start line.

Then at noon, the races begin! Each of the fifty teams will get two timed runs down the course, which begins in Boston Square Gardens, takes a 90-degree right turn at ‘Crazy Corner’ into Cliff Parade, and then finishes at the mini-roundabout at the bottom of the hill.

The teams will be competing in age categories of under-13, under-16, adult, and veteran. The fastest team in each category will be presented with their trophies on stage on The Green at 4:45pm, by Cllr Geoff Hipperson, deputy borough mayor; Cllr Amanda Bosworth, mayor of Hunstanton; Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, borough council deputy leader, and Paul Searle, representing the main race sponsor, Searles Leisure Resort. Cllr Nockolds will also be judging and presenting the Concours d’elegance trophy for the best-decorated kart.
