Watercolour by Richard Bawden

Details

We are delighted to be exhibiting paintings and prints by Richard Bawden together with ceramics by Philip Wood.

Bircham Gallery has represented Richard Bawden in Norfolk since the gallery opened in 1988. He is a painter, printmaker and designer working predominantly in lino, etching and watercolour. His work has a graphic, linear quality and a strong sense of craftsmanship, which translates naturally into many forms. These have included book illustration, murals for restaurants, engraved glass, church windows and doors, a poster for London Transport, mosaics and furniture.

Born in 1936, the son of the well-known artist, Edward Bawden, R.A. Richard studied painting, printmaking and graphic design at Chelsea, St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art. His subject-matter is wide ranging – from his Hadleigh sitting room, cats, and garden to townscapes and landscapes.

‘Visually excited by what I see, I am driven by compulsion to draw and paint…Sometimes I am excited by the sheer grandeur of a place, and sometimes by the richness and depth of colour and texture. I am not ashamed to say that I love decoration yet also the presence of monumental geometric simplicity and the tension of a straight line.’

Philip Wood’s distinctive earthenware is characterized by it’s pale washed colour and detailed figurative relief: finely detailed sprigs depicting animals, fish, birds, leaves and ornaments.

Philip was first attracted to pottery through stoneware rather than earthenware but, discovered over time, that the English tradition of earthenware had a greater resonance for him, his Englishness and the way he lives.

Philip press-moulds the sprigs and applies them to the leather hard pots using water and an artist's paint brush. It is his skill in placing the birds and animals that gives his pots their charm. His work encompasses so much inherited memory and instinct that it proves to be deeply and lastingly attractive. His very personal, considered and quiet approach allows the viewer free reign to consider what each image, shape and combination of textures means to them and Philip's warm and humorous nature and his relaxed attitude undoubtedly shine out in his finished pots.
