Details

Discover the history, rich maritime heritage & story of Great Yarmouth from the Ice Age to the present day.
Come and explore this museum housed in a converted Victorian herring curing works and take an exciting journey into the past.

Discover Great Yarmouth's fascinating history, its rich maritime and fishing heritage and some of the colourful characters who made their living from the sea.

Wander through a Victorian 'Row' and see inside a fisherman's home. Experience the heady atmosphere of a 1950s quayside, take the wheel of a coastal Drifter and hear gripping tales of wreck and rescue on the high seas. Follow Great Yarmouth’s transformation from a sandbank to the present day, through times of boom and bust and war and peace.

Not usually open to public; we will have our 1940's Row shop open for visitors. So bring along your ration book to get your ration of sweets from the shopkeeper.

Lastly, get the final chance to explore our current exhibition Medieval Medicine from the Yorvik Group.

Get up close to human skeletons from the period and discover diverse approaches to treatment. Find out about diseases through interpretation; including a facial reconstruction of an unfortunate leprosy sufferer.

Discover medical methods through the barber surgeon’s chest of tools, the physician’s uroscopy wheel and the apothecary’s medicinal ingredients and treatments.

Plus there is a chance to see the short film A Touch of Plague, written by Horrible Histories author, Terry Deary.
