Details

Creative interpretations and displays utilising the research work done by volunteers during the Rows Project. Trail maps and tours will be available to go and explore them. There will be opportunities for visitors to share their own rows stories.

The Rows are an important part of the social history of Great Yarmouth as they housed many of the people of the town, and with that there are many stories to come from their past. They have been the focus of notable writers such as Dickens and Defoe but have also been the inspiration for other creative works through photography and art.

The rows and the people who lived there, had many hard times through tragedies in fire, illnesses and disasters until the subsequent damage during the first and second world wars, along with their already steady deterioration made way for clearance to then re-plan and re-develop parts of the town.
Some of the rows that remain now are seen as convenient cut throughs to the car parks from the town and are not often places that people take time to explore.
The Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust are leading a project through funding from Making Waves Together and Coastal Revival Fund focusing on the unique Rows of Great Yarmouth.
The Great Yarmouth Rows Project aims to enhance and improve some of the 86 remaining rows of the town that are subject to modern clutter, anti-social behaviour, neglect and decay.
Some of this has been done with the installation of new rows signs and interpretation panels to bring a new focus and unity within the rows.
Community engagement has been a central focus to the project through volunteering opportunities and has seen a keen interest in the rows which we hope to celebrate and share through this exhibition.
