HILARY SUMMERS contralto

JOSHUA ELLICOTT tenor

TIM HORTON piano

SCHUBERT Piano Sonata in D D.850

MAHLER Das Lied von der Erde

A rare chance to hear Das Lied von der Erde as Mahler originally composed it, with piano rather than orchestra. The sadness and hope in the great work shine through in this first version, the piano ably expressing the complex emotions of the journey.

In the first part of the concert Tim Horton will play Schubert’s sublime Piano Sonata in D D.850. In May 1825, following a period of ill health, Schubert travelled from Vienna to the spa towns of Gmunden and Gastein. The spectacular scenery of craggy peaks, green valleys, and mountain lakes sparked this magnificent sonata as well as the “Great” C major Symphony.

Hilary Summers (see 20th August) shares the platform with Joshua Ellicott, who makes a welcome return to South Creake. Born in Manchester, Joshua’s lyrical and powerful tenor voice is much in demand both in concerts and opera. Recent highlights include the title role of Lucio Silla at the 2017 Buxton Opera Festival, Messiah in Baden-Baden and the role of Zadok the Priest in Handel's Solomon in Edinburgh in May 2018.
