Riverside walking
One of the highlights of a trip to Norfolk is the simple pleasure of walking alongside the beautiful Broads, rivers and fens which are typical of the county.
You can find a marked walking route to follow or amble gently around some of Norfolks pretty country lanes and villages. | | Broadland Country Walks Broadland District Council has prepared a series of Broadland Country Walk leaflets which cover many of the prettiest and historic parts of the area and take in country lanes, bridleways and footpaths.
The walks vary in length from three to eight miles so there is something to suit walkers of all ability. These walks are a great way to experience the Norfolk countryside close up. Simply choose the type of countryside which appeals to you - marshland, fens, rivers or heath - and select a village as a starting point.

|  | Riverside nature There are several riverside nature reserves scattered around Norfolk where you can enjoy gentle walks and explore the county’s flora and fauna.
Visit the RSPB’s reserve at Surlingham or the Ted Ellis Trust at Wheatfen Broad where you will see conservation in action along with beautiful countryside.
At How Hill in Ludham you can enjoy the Broads countryside on foot via a number of public footpaths or by following the specially designed nature trail. Either way you are sure to spot some outstanding wildlife in this unspoilt and peaceful corner of Norfolk. | |  | Fenland walking The Fens, in West Norfolk, is a very different landscape from the Norfolk Broads. It is a mysterious area of dykes, ditches, rivers and remote villages with its own distinctive beauty.
Downham Market, a small hillside town on the edge of the Fens, provides an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding countryside and waterways. The recently restored Denver Mill nearby is well worth a visit.
The Hilgay Circular Walk is a gentle 4km walk in picturesque surroundings. It takes in quiet country roads and grassy pathways and lanes. It's the perfect way to enjoy the fenland countryside and you are bound to see lots of birds.
The Southery Walk, at 14.5km, is for the more energetic walker.
