FAQ’s
It’s been an exciting time this summer as Norfolk became one of the UK’s more exotic destinations. From Go Elephants! in Norwich to giraffes at Banham Zoo and crocodiles in Cromer’s new Amazona Zoo, the county was animal crazy, and also offered plenty of local species at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, home of BBC Springwatch. See below for more details...
Sponsors Elephants everywhere Quick Search
£200,000 raised at auction of Go Elephants! The event that took Norwich by storm this summer.
Norwich’s streets hosted more than 50 life size baby elephants under the banner Go Elephants! and Cromer played host to Go Crocodiles! Both were ‘mammoth’ public art events that ran throughout July and August and saw hundreds of visitors and residents completing trails to find each one and marvel at their artwork. For more information visit www.goelephants.co.uk.
Amazona Zoo
South American comes to Cromer with the opening of the Amazona Zoo at the end of June. This exciting new visitor attraction is home to more than 80 different South American species. For more information, visit http://www.amazonazoo.co.uk.
40th Birthday at Banham Zoo
Banham Zoo celebrated its 40th birthday with a new Giraffe House. Banham plays a key part in the conservation of species worldwide, and is part of the ‘Big 3’ group of tourist attractions in Norfolk. The zoo originally started out as a pheasant farm and has gradually grown to be home to the thousands of species that live there today.
Open Churches
Did you know… Norfolk has one of the largest number of historic churches in the world? To celebrate, over 100 churches opened their doors to the public, in August as part of the third Open Churches Week. Visitors had the unique pleasure of seeing extraordinary architecture and artefacts that would not normally be seen.

Plans are already afoot for Open Churches Week 2009, starting with a Classic Car Rally on August 1st. More details will be provided in future newsletters.
Pensthorpe stars in BBC Springwatch
Pensthorpe Nature Reserve gained national fame as the new host of BBC’s Springwatch from May 26 to June 12. The show and its presenters Bill Oddie and Kate Humble produced many other stars that continue to put Pensthorpe in the spotlight, in particular Toilet Duck and Oystercatcher babies Oscar and Emi, who stole the show with their antics!

The programme was great coverage for Norfolk providing a valuable insight into some of the many wildlife and nature habitats it has to offer, to millions of people across the country. The event was so successful that the BBC have already confirmed that they wish to come back in 2009 and is in talks with Pensthorpe to return.
‘Kingdom’ Conquers Northern-Europe
Kingdom has provided a great boost for Norfolk and the Swaffham area contributing some £2.5 million to the local economy and welcoming increasing numbers of visitors wanting to discover ‘Market Shipborough’ and ‘Kingdom Country.’

An innovative link up between Norfolk Tourism, Norfolk County Council, and the Hallmark Channel used the popular TV programme, screened in Scandinavia earlier this year, to ‘showcase’ Norfolk as a visitor destination .Six lucky winners visited Norfolk for a 3-day break following an on-air viewers competition, kindly hosted by Knights Hill Hotel, Hoste Arms, Le Strange Arms Hotel, The George Hotel, Searles Leisure Resort, and Manor House Farm.
