Catch a cricket match on the village green, potter around the little church, then call in at a welcoming pub for some local fayre and a pint of “Wherry” beer.
Others, such as Burnham Market, are the epitome of sophistication with stylish shops and award-winning restaurants. Here you’ll find fine food, beautiful clothes, elegant galleries and gifts to rival the best Covent Garden can offer.
Many of the villages in Norfolk are packed with history and several have village trails to help you explore. Experience 12th century life with an audio tour at Castle Rising castle or come to Castle Acre Priory and discover how the monks used to live. Climb up the windmills at Denver, Letheringsett and Great Bircham and watch flour being made – what an amazing view! - or visit Great Cressingham to see the rare wind and water mill.
Lots of our Norfolk villages have museums so you can potter around rambling collections at places such as Litcham and Gressenhall where you can even explore inside the old workhouse. Or put on your flying jacket and take a trip to Horsham St Faith to visit the fine aviation museum.
If you fancy your history a little more light-hearted, you can roam amongst dinosaurs at Weston Longville, let the kids play on the 75ft activity dinosaur, relax by the water gardens and then picnic in the park!
And Norfolk villages are peppered with churches. In fact we’ve got over 700 of them, many with round towers! Come inside to see the hefty old pews, delicate wall paintings or beautiful stained glass windows and hand carved ceilings. If you pop into Burnham Thorpe’s church you’ll also find some Nelson memorabilia as his father was vicar there. Or why not wander round the holy shrines of Walsingham and follow in the footsteps of pilgrims from centuries ago. There’s still a wealth of religious buildings and a special peaceful atmosphere.
Whichever Norfolk village you visit, there’s always something going on from finding a potter at his wheel to open gardens or a busy nursery. If you time it right, you may catch a lively village fete, a flower festival or even some morris dancers. Come along and join in the fun – you’ll soon get caught up in all the excitement and we’ll have you waving a scarf and ringing your bells in no time at all…!
