Norfolk has a huge selection of pretty market towns for you to discover. Many have ancient buildings such as a Butter-Cross or Guildhall or old merchants’ houses. The bustling markets and public buildings are where people have met for centuries to buy and sell their wares and pass the time of day. They are still important places at the heart of our local community and this is where you’ll find the real Norfolk!
Come and enjoy the bustle without the headache of congestion and parking that you have in big cities. Browse around the specialist shops in Holt, and treat yourself in the delicatessen. Wander around picturesque Wymondham with its stunning market cross and ancient abbey, call in at Downham Market with its unusual black and white clock, or discover pretty Diss with its beautiful mere and 16th century timber-framed houses.
You’ll find the towns in Norfolk have a good mix of old and new. Walking around Reepham is like stepping back in time with its rows of 18th century houses, Aylsham holds popular auctions for fine art, books and antiques, and pretty Swaffham has a famous market as well as a wind turbine with viewing platform!
But Norfolk’s towns have more than just markets to offer. Come to Fakenham and place your bets on the horses at the busy racecourse – a favourite haunt of the Royals, or delve into the history of Thetford with its ancient priory and magnificent forest. You could even follow the special Dad’s Army trail and see if you recognise many of the buildings used in the popular TV series.
And don’t forget the haunted trail … many of our towns are simply so attractive that the old residents just never want to leave!
