Norfolk gives you so many choices for boating and sailing.
For a gentle pace, try out the tranquil Norfolk Broads where you’ve got 125 miles of lock-free navigable waterways with peaceful anchorages. The wildlife is spectacular with bitterns, sedge warblers, swans, herons, huge dazzling dragonflies and bright flitting butterflies.
A Broads cruiser is perfect. You can hire your boat by the hour, day or week and it’s so simple to steer. Chug along at a slow steady pace taking in the scenery and stop off at welcoming pubs or pretty Norfolk villages along the way. You can even cruise right in and moor up in the centre of Norwich to take advantage of all that the city has to offer. Travelling by boat means you avoid the traffic and one-way systems and you have the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind and soak up the atmosphere.
If you fancy learning to sail, the Norfolk Broads School of Sailing offers RYA courses which run at a relaxed pace to give you plenty of time for free sailing and enjoying the Broads experience. This is Britain’s largest, nationally protected wetland and even Admiral Horatio Nelson learnt to sail here before joining the Royal Navy and going to sea.
Sailing from the Norfolk coast is also hugely popular and you see dozens of people wandering around the towns and villages in tell-tale deck shoes! If you don’t have your own boat, try taking a course at a local sailing school such as the one at Blakeney Point and you’ll soon be getting into the swing of it. In the evenings, our coastal villages are bursting with wonderful pubs and restaurants offering the catch of the day, while amateur sailors compare stories and exploits.
If even that is too much for you and you prefer someone else to take the helm, how about an offshore fishing trip or tour of the Norfolk coastline? Feel the adrenalin rush as you whisk across the water, watch playful schools of porpoises and then sit back to dine onboard with food specially prepared in the galley by a gourmet chef!
Or the very least you should do is take a day trip out to see the seals. Climb aboard a wooden ferryboat from picturesque Blakeney harbour or Morston quay and slowly wind up the creek to see a colony of hundreds of seals basking in the sun.
Don’t forget to bring your camera!
