Fishing in Norfolk
Norfolk offers plenty of fantastic angling opportunities. From day fishing spots on lakes, pits and rivers, to the Norfolk Broads or our fine Norfolk coastline, you are only ever a short cast away from brilliant fishing!

The Norfolk Broads has over 200 miles of rivers and inland waterways stocked full of species such as pike, perch, chub, bream, roach and tench. You’ll find some of the best rod and line fishing around so even the most inexperienced will soon get a bite. In fact, the Broads is a mecca for pike angling and people travel from all over the world to fish here. Even on a fly.

Or head for Narborough Trout and Course Lakes. Situated in the beautiful Nar Valley in natural water meadows, the pure clear water of this river has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The five lakes are set amongst 27 acres and the site is challenging enough for experienced fishermen but also good for beginners - and you can even get tuition. If you still don’t have much luck you can buy fresh or smoked trout from the shop and no one need know the difference! Other good areas for trout fishing in Norfolk are the lake at East Tuddenham and pretty River Wensum.

But the Norfolk coast is a different kettle of fish altogether. The Wash can be jumping with bass over the summer and there are prime fishing spots from Wells all the way round to Walcott. You can try fishing for mackerel from Cromer pier, or for winter cod at Mundesley, for dabs, flounders and sometimes sole at Overstrand or eel and plaice at Sheringham.

Or how about angling in the Fens Drains? The Fens has miles of long straight waterways just waiting to be fished. Park by the river, climb over the bank and away you go. Big specimen examples of roach, bream and tench make for proper fishing and you’ll really have tales of the one that got away here! The open spaces are popular with predator anglers and the beautiful wild settings really help you relax and blow those cobwebs away.

Or why not take to the high seas and try some offshore tope fishing in Norfolk? Day trips are available with experienced skippers who know the waters like the back of their hand so they can whisk you across the waves to the prime Norfolk fishing areas and some can even rustle up a tasty seafood lunch whilst you continue to fish.
John Wilson - a local expert
Local expert, John Wilson, is a huge enthusiast for angling in East Anglia and he still lives in Norfolk close to the River Wensum. Despite catching many big fish in exotic locations, John still has his heart in Norfolk and his book shares the secrets of the immense variety of fishing opportunities in our county.

“There is such an array of available fishing in East Anglia that much of it is little known, especially by the coarse angler who often tends only to think in terms of the Norfolk Broads and their accompanying tidal rivers. However, quite apart from the clean flowing upper reaches of the big rivers, several interesting mini-rivers and many streams, there is so much more available sport now to be found in the unlimited acres comprised of ponds, lakes, meres and particularly in clay, gravel and sand pits.”

John’s book, The Definitive Guide on Where to Fish in Norfolk & Suffolk retails at £9.95 and is available from most tackle shops.
