Kingdom is a gentle drama starring Stephen Fry. Solicitor Peter Kingdom's compassion and humility has won him huge respect in the picturesque seaside town of Market Shipborough (real location Swaffham, Norfolk). Peter Kingdom is an affable country solicitor in Market Shipborough. Aided by faithful receptionist and confidante Gloria, and young trainee solicitor Lyle, Peter does his best to make testing times bearable for his clients.

Simon's brother, Peter, mysteriously vanished without any trace and Peter is left picking up the pieces. As Peter seeks clues to Simon's mysterious fate, he also has his troubled younger sister Beatrice to deal with. Thank heavens, then, for the counsel of his wise Aunt Auriel.

The second series saw the surprising return of Simon, albeit as a fugitive on the run. Peter is torn between loyalty to his brother and that of the firm, and things get even more complicated with the discovery of a bag containing half a million pounds!

In the new series, Peter is free from the havoc that his brother Simon provoked in the town and is looking forward to the future, but the locals have plenty of issues to keep him busy including the problems of crop circles, an Iraq war victim’s bid for compensation and an encounter with animal liberationists.

Swaffham, a perfect Market Town

Norfolk resident Stephen Fry gives a locals eye view of Swaffham, the real Market Shipborough:

"I have lived a few miles away from Swaffham for over 20 years. I have always admired the balance between modernity and tradition that the town has managed to strike and have always felt at home amongst its people. There's something about the place, a perfect market town, perfectly placed in the heart of Norfolk's perfect Breckland.

When we decided on making Kingdom, I was very sure that the producers and writers should visit Swaffham and perhaps gain some inspiration from it. I had secretly hoped that they would be so struck by the town that they would want to film there.

All of us connected to Kingdom are grateful to the town and its hospitable people for allowing us the opportunity to make the series there. Dozens of actors, production staff and film technicians have fallen in love with the town and with this part of Norfolk.

Swaffham is a wonderful place to visit, a wonderful place to stay and a wonderful place to know."
