| Celebrate food! | Situated in such rich agricultural farmland, Norwich is proud of its excellent local produce. The Norfolk Food Festival, held end September to early October each year, is a chance to celebrate this along with our excellent chefs and all things food really! With tasting sessions, cooking demonstrations, celebrity chef master classes and even a ‘Battle of the Bangers’ competition it is a spectacular event. |
| A little something to take home | There are some wonderful places where you can browse, sample and perhaps buy a treat to take home. Just walking past Norwich market you will see stall upon stall laden with fresh produce and if you venture inside you will discover even more on offer. There are also regular Farmers’ Markets in the city, every first and third Sunday of the month, where you can meet our local food heroes from meat and poultry farmers to bakers of fine traditional cakes and breads, to sample and buy their outstanding produce. At certain times of the year Gentleman’s Walk plays host to a magnificent French market selling specialist cheeses, breads and cakes. Jarrold’s Department Store has an exquisite delicatessen stacked with fresh meats, cheese, local and hand-made products and if you’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth pop into Caley’s Cocoa Café in the Guildhall where you will be tempted by some of the finest chocolates around! |
| Pint of Wherry, Reedcutter or Hanged Monk? | If you consider yourself to a bit of a connoisseur of your beers and ales then you’ll love the Norwich Beer Festival. Held in the 14th Century St Andrews and Blackfriars Hall in late October, there are over 200 real ales, many continental beers and lagers and an impressive selection of cider to sample!
Whatever your choice of tipple, Norwich's pubs are champions of local food and drink. Whilst you're here, don't forget to sample some of the local ales - from Woodforde's Wherry, Norfolk Nog and Nelson's Revenge, or Tipples' Redhead or Hanged Monk, through to Fox Brewery's Peddars Sway and Humpty Dumpty Brewery's Reedcutter - there's plenty to choose from!
The Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) has recently released the 2010 edition of the ale bible 'The Good Beer Guide' and Norfolk comes out a winner! With 31 breweries within the county, Norfolk is second only to West Yorkshire for production, and Norwich itself has been singled out for praise thanks to its real ale pubs. In an interview with the Evening News, the Good Beer Guide editor Roger Protz states that "Norfolk in particular has the most astonishing number of breweries and Norwich is one of the best places in the entire country for drinking good beer. It has wonderful pubs."
