Stephen Fry plays country solicitor Peter Kingdom, who’s compassion and humility has won him huge respect in the town of Market Shipborough. He returns to ITV1 in his first drama series since Jeeves and Wooster ten years ago.
Stephen was delighted to be cast in a drama which was filmed so close to his home in Norfolk: the main location was just seven minutes away.
“I was born in London but grew up in Norfolk from the age of six and a half. I love the area. I am a very proud ambassador for Norfolk. I do love it. I think it is a magical part of the world. Norfolk has a wonderful landscape. It is a great place to come to clear the cobwebs out of your mind. It has big skies and towering cloud scapes.”
Stephen Fry has also appeared in Tom Brown’s school days, Absolute Power and Wilde. |
| Hermione Norris | Hermione Norris stars as Peter’s troubled lustful younger sister Beatrice who wreaks havoc when she comes to live with him after being released from rehabilitation clinic.
Hermione decamped to Norfolk for the shoot and fell in love with the area.
“I wasn’t familiar with Norfolk at all. Now I really do understand why people have a real draw or pull to it, it really does have a strong identity all of its own.
“The Norfolk coast is amazing, we stayed in the very beautiful village of Castle Acre. It’s just very very rich farm land and it really is an extraordinary place.”
Hermione Norris has also appeared in Wire in the Blood, Spooks and Cold Feet. |
| Karl Davies | Karl Davis is sharp trainee solicitor Lyle Anderson who dreams of escaping the sleepy backwater to work in the metropolis. His character is an articled clerk in the solicitor’s firm of Kingdom and Kingdom.
“Lyle is fresh out of university where he was distracted by pool tables and snooker rooms and the girls, more than he was interested in working hard. But he is sharp and intelligent and he got a degree without even trying – so he’s done rather well.
“He was aiming for London. He was attracted by the lifestyle, the sharp suits and the flash cars. But he got sidetracked and ended up in Market Shipborough.”
Karl Davies has also appeared in Dead Clever, Dolphins and Emmerdale. |
| Celia Imrie | Celia Imrie stars as Gloria Millington, the faithful receptionist and Peter Kingdom’s trusted confidante. Gloria has been recently widowed and is struggling to cope on her own with her wayward 12 year old son Scott (played by her real life son Angus).
Celia and Angus rented a small flat inn the Norfolk village where Kingdom was filmed, and took advantage of time off to explore the area.
“My favourite place was Holkham beach which features in the opening titles of Kingdom. It cant be bettered. I tried to find beaches that were more beautiful and more expansive, but there weren’t any. That is just the prime beach in the whole area. At the moment it is still marvellously wild.”
Celia Imrie has also appeared in Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason, Calendar Girls and The Last Detective. |
| Tony Slattery | Tony Slattery stars as cantankerous villager Sidney Snell, who’s always seeking litigation.
“In each episode he is what I suppose may be called a vicarious litigant. There is always something because he’s fascinated by the legal process and by local traditions and doesn’t want them upset. Whether it’s dyke leaping competitions or where the sheep graze or where there are speed bumps in roads.
“He’s one of those people who are annoying in one way because they are continually suing the council. But in another way he’s mildly heroic, because he’s a little man against a big system.” |
