Norwich Market
One of the first stops during your stay in Norwich must be the extensive open air Norwich Market. Situated in the centre of the city and surrounded by some of Norwich's great historic buildings including the flint 15th century Guildhall, the market is a colour explosion! Underneath the rainbow coloured roofs you will find stalls selling everything imaginable from fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, clothes and much more. Open six days a week it is the largest open air market in England, so take some time to wander around the rows, talk to the friendly market traders and grab yourself a bargain!
Gentleman's Walk and Jarrolds
Just opposite the market you will find Gentleman's Walk, packed with many of the regular high street names including Top Shop, WH Smith and HMV. As the main pedestrian area of the city, the walkway bustles with shoppers while there are cafes where you can enjoy some refreshments and just watch the world buzz by. It is along this stretch you will find the exciting, family-run Jarrolds Department Store, which is over 240 years old. Exclusive to Norwich, Jarrolds has twice won UK's Independent Department Store of the Year, and has been voted the UK's Favourite Department Store by The Times, and once you go inside you will soon find out why. Spread over five floors each department has an incredible range of products some of which are so new or unusual you won't find them in any of the other high street chains.
The Mall Norwich and Chapelfield
Norwich is now home to not one but two shopping centres. Built into the Castle mound, The Mall Norwich has a wonderfully sympathetic design. The large glass roof allows plenty of light to penetrate this incredible shopping centre situated mostly underground. Here you will find shops such as TK Maxx and Boots along with independent retailers, a fantastic food court, an 8-screen cinema complex and even a park on the top! The latest addition to Norwich is Chapelfield, a stylish and modern development that blends in with its surroundings. With over 80 shops including the only House of Fraser in the region, Chapelfield is a must visit during your stay.
The Royal Arcade and Elm Hill
While the shopping centres shout out to visitors there are some more unassuming but stunning areas of the city. The Royal Arcade is one such place. Just off Gentleman's Walk you could easily miss this little gem. Walk through the archway and inside you will find a beautiful covered avenue with wrought iron lamps, art noveau tiling and stained glass window. An array of unusual shops are to be found here including a chocolate shop with old fashioned sugar mice in the windows and the Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum. Just a short walk from here you will come to one of Norwich's most famous areas - Elm Hill. Stepping down the cobbled hill you will be taken back to the 16th century as you find yourself immersed by gorgeous Tudor architecture. Inside these buildings are some exquisite shops including a teddy bear store, antique shops and independent galleries.
Norwich Lanes
Stroll around Norwich Lanes to discover a wonderful assortment of small boutiques, music and gift shops, second-hand stores, cafés and restaurants and more. Whether shopping or browsing you will find everything imaginable from unique fashions to distinctive jewellery, global foods to unusual herbal remedies! Beautiful buildings and narrow streets full of character makes Norwich Lanes a great place to visit.
Even more shops - something for everyone!
Whatever your shopping weakness Norwich is sure to tempt you. For those with expensive tastes take a stroll along London Street, home to names such as East and Jaeger and some wonderful jewellery stores or try Timberhill with its specialist boutiques and shoes shops including a bespoke tailors for the gentlemen. If you're a bit of a bargain hunter pop along to Anglia Square or for something completely out of the ordinary, St Benedicts must not be missed with its eclectic range of shops and hidden restaurants.
