Surlingham Church Marsh

Surlingham Church Marsh

What's it like?
You can start at the church or at the moorings. The route takes you along the river and through marshes. You can take a shorter or longer route from either starting point and near the ruins you can either take the path across the field or stay on the marsh path.

What wildlife lives there?
The walk takes you around this RSPB wetland nature reserve so you should see lots of water birds. In the early spring look out for the bright yellow of marsh marigolds. There's wet willow woodland on either side of the lane leading to the river.

What else is there to see?
The village church and also the ruins of St Saviour's Church. Norfolk naturalist Ted Ellis and Phyllis Ellis are buried there. Ted described the Broads as 'a breathing space for the cure of souls'.

Did you know?
You can also go walking at the Ted Ellis Nature Reserve at Wheatfen - go through Surlingham on the road called The Common and follow the signs. The walks include a short section of boardwalk. The village of Rockland St Mary is a little further down the river, with an easy access walk close to Rockland Broad.
