Historic Castle Acre guided walks

Historic Castle Acre guided walks

Details

Walks around the beautiful and ancient village, led by a guide (organised by the Friends of Castle Acre Church). Walks will generally take place on Saturday mornings and on the dates and times found at; http://www.historiccastleacre.com

Learn how more than a thousand years of history are revealed through its streets, buildings and the stories of people who have lived and worked there. Highlights include;

The Parish Church of St James the Great, the glorious medieval wool Church and its magnificent font cover, mostly 15th century but with remnants from previous centuries.

The formidable 11th century Castle earthworks, some of the most impressive in Britain and built by a cousin of
William the Conqueror.

The extensive picturesque 12th century Priory, largely dismantled and ruined nearly five hundred years ago by king Henry VIII but still standing.

Delightful and fascinating Stocks Green and Bailey Street, where a thousand years of village history is written in brick and flint.
