Circus, Clowns and Catastrophe. Heritage Guided Walk - Special

Details

Enjoy this fascinating 'special' heritage guided walk as part of Great Yarmouth's Heritage Open Days Event.

A free show in Great Yarmouth pulls the crowds today as much as it did nearly two hundred years ago.

In 1845 competition for a better view sadly led to a struggle for life when hundreds of spectators were propelled into the cold waters of the River Bure while watching a clown’s stunt.

It was the greatest loss of life the town has ever experienced. In this ‘special’ walk led by one of our trained heritage guides, visit the places associated with the disaster and find out how, where and why it happened, about the personalities and victims, and how the people of Great Yarmouth and the country reacted and the legacy it left behind.

This walk will then follow a route through the town and finish in St. George's Park at the Mermadelica Fountain Bar, an example of how Great Yarmouth still works closely with architects and artists and how circus is still very much a part of daily life.

We may also have available a copy of the original Nelson the Clown poster available to be seen, kindly loaned by the Hippodrome Circus.
